Every year, we look forward to the month of April to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month. Founded in 2001 by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, it’s an opportunity to highlight everything we love about the genre, its history, and the rich cultural and musical heritage that continues to bestow incredible and unique music to us every day.
Of course, you can hear the fruits of that heritage every day on Jazz 93.5. Unlike other stations – even other jazz stations – we seek to enrich your days with a broad spectrum of jazz music, broadcast throughout history and from all corners of the world. You’ll hear everything from signature Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington recordings to classic jazz fusion; Swing era hits to today’s hard-hitting neo-bop. You can also discover incredible Afro-Cuban sounds from some of today’s greatest Latine musicians, enjoy classic bossa nova sides beyond Jobim, and hear the latest trio-fusion sounds from Hiromi (of Japan) or Joey Alexander (of Indonesia). Whatever your tastes, there’s always something you’ll love and something new to unearth on your favorite jazz station – a great resource to further appreciate this great American art form.
But don’t let your appreciation stop when the radio clicks off. There is an abundance of excellent jazz music happening here in the Pikes Peak region. Weekly, you can hear in-demand artists and well-honed ensembles at venues like Tokki, which nowadays is practically a bona fide jazz club. The Armadillo on Colorado Springs’ west side hosts music Mondays in collaboration with Tidal Breeze Jazz Arts. Check out the jazz brunch at Notes, a new spot that recently opened in Northgate dedicated to showcasing live music along with a top-notch bar. And an insider tip: look for Dizzy Charlie’s Pop Up Jazz (currently running in Summa taphouse) a new startup that will be bringing you the region’s best jazz acts weekly in various locations.
Jazz is a unique art form that at once celebrates the creative singularity of the individual and the democratic power of the collective. At Jazz 93.5, we celebrate this exclusive duality and incomparable music throughout the year. This month, we invite you to listen online, on the air, and in your community to hear your favorite sounds and discover something new during Jazz Appreciation Month.
